What Causes Employee Burnout?

Managers often wonder what causes employee burnout, but the answer is often caused by the managers themselves.  How?  Employees suffer from burnout when they don’t have a manager they can talk to comfortably about how they are doing at work.  Over half of Americans report that they are afraid to approach managers or HR, and most report that they have wanted to speak to a manager but didn’t due to fear of retaliation.

Employees begin to burn out when they suffer an injustice and either have no real way to speak up, or simply don’t speak up due to fear.  For example, an employee named Monique was offended when a coworker named Sam commented about her name, stating “I thought Monique was a Black name.”  Monique, who is Hispanic, tried to ignore the comment but it bothered her and she was uncomfortable with this coworker now. She spent hours thinking about whether or not she was welcome in the workplace and if her other coworkers thought the same way Sam did.  She did not want to approach Sam, but also didn’t want to speak up at the risk of being labeled a troublemaker.

Monique isn’t alone.  Like her, over 85% of employees have stated that they have experienced similar situations. Employee burnout takes many forms, but suffering aggressive behavior from coworkers like Sam amounts to the largest part of the problem.  Includrs has developed the solution: putting HR and reporting in the hands of employees who can choose how they want to proceed to correct the bad behavior.

How does it work? Employee burnout from microaggressions is able to be reported.  In the above example, Monique could have used Includrs to document the aggression from Sam and either report it directly to HR or take a simple route by receiving counseling from a friend. Monique could also message Sam directly if necessary through Includrs to start the conversation about how and why she was uncomfortable with Sam’s behavior.

Adding Includrs to your company’s benefits and offerings solves two problems: first it solves the problem of the widespread fear of HR.  Employees can view all of their options about a microaggression before even approaching HR.  This empowers employees and makes the process less confusing and stressful.  Secondly, using Includrs reduces your company’s liability for discrimination lawsuits and settlements. Includrs allows for full documentation, extra training, and employee solutions, all available on a smartphone or laptop.  The average settlement cost for a discrimination claim is over $5,000 nationwide, with a high of over $25,000 in California.
